The Basics and Instructions for the FOF Challenge:
The FOF Challenge is a call to Christians to donate his or her status update for a certain time period (a week, a month or until an assigned date) in order to create online conversation with non-believers about faith in Christ.
Some things to understand before you get started…
- Familiarize yourself with your call in Acts 1:8, Matthew 28:19-20, etc.
- Understand that success in witness is not in leading someone to Christ, success is found in being faithful… the Holy Spirit does the work of salvation. We are the privileged messengers.
- Know that you are looking to enter into spiritual conversations, which may take time, not a run-and-gun witness; rather a commitment to seeing the conversation play itself out.
How To Participate in the FOF Challenge.
- Pick a designated time period you will concentrate on doing the FOF Challenge (one week, a month or until a designated date).
- Update your status update with something along the lines of “Ask me about my FOF Challenge!”
- When people ask (typically on your wall), answer through two avenues. First, reply to their request by saying “check your inbox, I replied there.” Second, reply through a private message.
- Your Reply via private message should be something along these lines: “The FOF is a challenge I am taking; it stands for Faith on Facebook. My challenge is to find out what my Facebook friends think about Jesus. What do you think of Jesus?”
- Pray for that friend to continue the conversation and be ready to answer them when they ask you what YOU think of Jesus? Be ready to give an account for your faith.
Sample of what has happened:
For the sake of example, we’re using Bryce (FOF Participant) and Jordan (Facebook friend).
- Bryce’s Status Update: “Great day today, don’t hesitate to ask me about my FOF Challenge”
- Jordan comments on Bryce’s Status: “Okay, what gives? What is your FOF?”
- Bryce replies first in a private message: “The FOF is a challenge I am taking, it stands for Faith on Facebook, I was challenged to find out what my Facebook friends think of Jesus… so, what do you think of Jesus?”
- Bryce then replies on the wall as well: “I just sent you a private message explaining my FOF, go check it out!”
- More than likely Jordan will answer (via private message) with his/her thoughts about Jesus. It will then be up to Bryce to read the words carefully and see where his entry points are into the conversation. A lot of times the non-Christian friend will bring up religion and not necessarily answer anything about Jesus. Sometimes the friend will ask “what do you think about Jesus?”
- Bryce will have to pray and discern what the next step is depending upon Jordan’s answer. However, the conversation has started and this was the original goal!
Note to Participants… it is key that you understand how to share your faith in a conversational and Gospel-centric way. Understand the essentials in sharing about Jesus. If you do not feel confident in this, please meet with a pastor, youth leader or mature Christian in order to help you in these areas so that you can clearly communicate the Gospel truth.
